Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia Linked to More Opioid Prescriptions

Data published in BMC Psychiatry indicate people with bipolar disorder (BPD) were dispensed opioid medications more often than similar patients with schizophrenia (SZ) or age- and sex-matched controls.

According to the researchers, these patient populations may have increased risk for complications from prescribed opioids, including opioid-induced respiratory depression (BMC Psychiatry 2024;24[1]:244).

“While the
