A bill that would require California insurers to cover the cost of over-the-counter (OTC) naloxone was vetoed by the state’s governor.
The California Department of Public Health reported nearly 6,000 deaths from opiate overdoses in 2021. Among the department’s many recommendations to reduce opiate deaths is the suggestion that opioid users and their loved ones carry naloxone, which has been made available OTC nationwide but is still out of reach for some patients.
