With more than 40 people a day dying from an opioid overdose, the epidemic of opioid abuse in the United States is taking a staggering human and economic toll, according to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD.
Many of those addicted individuals started with an appropriately prescribed medication. “Unfortunately, the fact remains that there are still too many prescriptions being written for opioids,” Dr. Gottlieb said in a statement.
