Since our founding in 1897, BD has sought to make health care more effective, efficient and safer through innovation in areas that leverage the company’s clinical knowledge and expertise. Our focus on the safe handling of hazardous drugs builds on the company’s legacy and commitment to advancing the world of health.
Every day, thousands of pharmacists and nurses put their health at risk preparing, administering, transporting and disposing of hazardous drugs. Multiple organizations such as the National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health, ASHP, the Oncology Nursing Society, the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners and the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention all recommend a comprehensive safety program to prevent exposure to hazardous drugs, which can include use of closed system drug-transfer devices (CSTDs). BD Hazardous Drug Safety offers a broad array of products and solutions to help keep health care workers safe, and the clinical expertise and evidence necessary to deliver a tailored solution that is designed to reduce the risk for exposure, improve efficiencies and help facilitate compliance to existing guidelines and standards.

The BD PhaSeal™ System is a pioneer in the CSTD space and is currently the most widely used and studied, with more than 25 peer-reviewed, published studies. The BD PhaSeal System utilizes a membrane-to-membrane technology to deliver airtight and leak-proof performance without the use of vents or filters. It mechanically prohibits the transfer of environmental contaminants into the system and the escape of hazardous drug or vapor concentrations outside the system. The BD PhaSeal System also works in reverse, preventing microbial ingress, and has been documented to be used as part of a drug vial optimization program to help reduce drug waste.
The BD Hazardous Drug Safety portfolio of products also offers the Texium™ System, which utilizes a mechanical valve technology to protect health care workers and patients. When Texium and SmartSite™ are paired together through a needle-free, luer locking connection, they provide a leak-free, drip-free connection and disconnection. The Texium System includes bonded syringes and integrated IV sets, which offer a great workflow advantage, especially when combined with the Alaris™ pump system for administration. With a range of vial adapter options, including the SmartSite™ universal vial adapter, the SmartSite™ Vented Vial Access device and the SmartSite™ VialShield closed vial access device, this system provides pharmacists and nurses with a flexible, simple and cost-effective safety solution.
BD Hazardous Drug Safety can tailor a solution to meet your unique combination of clinical evidence, workflow efficiency and financial performance needs for the safe handling of hazardous drugs.
