Specialty Pharmacy Continuum (SPC) is a dynamic addition to the Pharmacy Practice News editorial franchise, featuring essential clinical and business information for specialty pharmacies, home infusion providers, insurers and group purchasing organizations.

Specialty pharmacy continues to experience explosive, double-digit growth, and for the past six years, SPC has been tracking this trend and its effect on patients and providers. Topics covered over the course of our bimonthly print issues include biosimilars, site-of-care optimization strategies, drug adherence aids, best practices in home infusion and nutrition and the use of cutting-edge technology to improve patient care.

Our coverage also reflects the growing role that specialty pharmacists are playing in transitions of care, hence our focus on the entire patient-care continuum—from the hospital to the home and other community-based care settings.

Features

SPC includes a number of recurring features to meet the informational needs of our readers:

Ask the Experts. One recent Q&A installment featured an interview with Armando Bardisa, PharmD, the owner and CEO of SMP Pharmacy Solutions, in South Miami, Florida, who discussed lessons learned over a decade of building his privately owned specialty pharmacy into one of Inc. magazine’s 5,000 fastest-growing companies in the United States.

Disease State Spotlight. Recent topics include psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; and a two-part series on immune disorders, focusing on multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Practice Profiles. This feature includes in-depth examples of “best practices” in home infusion therapy, specialty pharmacy and other key patient care settings.

Policy Update. Health care reform, REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies), and Joint Commission compliance and accreditation are among the topics we track as needed.

Meeting Coverage

SPC editors and writers attend a wide range of conferences throughout the year, including the Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit, MHA Annual Business Summit, and the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy’s Annual Meeting & Expo. These meetings primarily target established specialty pharmacy providers. However, we also help readers stay abreast of relatively new, nontraditional competitors in specialty pharmacy. Health systems are a prime example: Many of these entities are adding millions of dollars in new revenue annually by expanding their specialty pharmacy offerings. Hence our coverage of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Summer Meeting and Midyear Clinical Meetings, each of which included specialty pharmacy topics in their 2016 programming.

We also welcome contributed articles, so if you are a clinical expert or operational whiz—regardless of which specialty pharmacy segment you represent—we’d like to hear from you. Send your topic ideas to davidb@mcmahonmed.com, and we will help you share your insights and lessons learned.
